Hospital news | Friday, January 5, 2024

Liz Whelan, MSN, BA, RN, CDCES, diabetes and clinical educator at Cass Regional Medical Center, retired January 5, after 28 years of service to the organization.

Whelan began her career as a night nurse in the ICU in 1995, and she then became the first night nurse supervisor. In 2003, she started working in cardiac rehabilitation, and then began working in diabetes education, all while maintaining her night shift supervisor position. In 2011, she was promoted to the diabetes and education coordinator, and continued to work as needed as a night supervisor. Two years ago, Whelan stepped down from the coordinator role and continued to work part time as a diabetes and clinical educator.

“I will miss the day to day contact with everyone at Cass Regional,” said Whelan. “Our patients are family.”

Following her last day at Cass Regional, Whelan plans to travel and spend more time at Boy Scout camp. She also plans to return as a volunteer at Cass Regional.

Whelan said she has many fond memories made with her coworkers over the last 28 years at Cass Regional. “Some of my favorite memories are working for COVID-19 vaccine and swab clinics, wrangling HAL [the patient simulation manikin] in the sim lab, and dressing up with co-workers for Halloween.”

When asked what she would like to share with her coworkers before she retires, Whelan said, “It has been great to work here and at the old hospital. I have so many memories. You never really leave, there is always an opportunity to be involved at Cass Regional, even after you retire. Keep up the quality care; it is who we are.”
