Back to Spring 20242023 Community Benefit Report
For more than 60 years,
Cass Regional Medical Center has proudly been "Here for Your Health," serving the residents of Cass County and the surrounding areas. Our values of Family, Stewardship, Kindness, Respectfulness, Dedication and Excellence drive us to continually improve so that our patients have access to the best care possible. We are pleased to share our 2023 Community Benefit Report, which highlights some of the advancements we made last year associated with our five operational Pillars of Success: People, Quality, Customer Service, Growth and Financial Strength.
People
- We now employ more than 460 individuals, the majority of whom live in Cass County. These jobs result in approximately $38 million in annual salaries and benefits that are re-invested locally through the residents who live and shop in our area communities.
- We increased the number of students using Cass Regional for their clinical training and started discussion with a local school district to develop a health sciences program under the Real World Learning initiative.
- Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation awarded $10,000 in scholarships to six students who are pursuing careers and/or continuing education in health care.
- Our Patient Assistance Fund, which is made possible by donations to Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation, provided more than $21,000 in assistance to approximately 215 patients.
Customer Service
- As measured by overall rating of care, our patient satisfaction scores and percentile rankings against national benchmarks showed significant improvements in the areas of inpatient care (from the 64th percentile in 2022 to the 87th percentile in 2023) and emergency medicine (from the 51st to the 69th percentile).
- We continue to be rated four out of five stars under the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) patient survey rating.
- We received national recognition from the Healthcare Advertising Awards for our website and from the National Health Information Awards for the Fall 2022 issue of Wellness Matters.
Quality
- We continued to show strong performance in the CMS quality measures.
- We recertified as a Level III Trauma Center with the state of Missouri, and our Laboratory was reaccredited by The Joint Commission.
- We made several investments in our Pharmacy and medication administration services to improve quality and safety, including the replacement of automated drug dispensing cabinets and the hoods used to compound intravenous (IV) medications. We also upgraded the IV pumps that are used throughout the hospital.
Growth
- Overall, we grew by 3% (as measured by adjusted patient days) compared to budget and last year.
- We expanded specialist availability in urology and pain management.
- We replaced our information technology infrastructure (servers, firewall and spam filters) to remain current with industry standards.
- We opened Pleasant Hill Imaging Center, which provides CT and ultrasound services.
- We completed two construction projects in 2023—the Mills Cancer and Rheumatology Center and the Pleasant Hill Medical Clinic expansion—and started a new project that will expand our Dietary department (to be completed later this year).
Financial Strength
- We made an additional principal payment on the debt that was incurred to build the medical center, which took another year off the time period needed to retire this debt. If payments continue, we will retire the debt in 2028 versus the current schedule of 2035.
- We invested nearly $3 million in facilities and in new and replacement equipment.
- We provided $243,875 in charity care.
- We donated more than $12,000 in support of 21 community organizations.
- We ended the year with 444 days of cash on hand. This makes Cass Regional Medical Center one of the most financially strong critical-access hospitals in the state and nation.
