Back to Spring 20252024 Community Benefit Report
For more than 60 years, Cass Regional Medical Center has proudly been "Here for Your Health," serving the residents of Cass County and the surrounding areas. Our values of Family, Stewardship, Kindness, Respectfulness, Dedication and Excellence drive us to continually improve so that our patients have access to the best care possible. We are pleased to share our 2024 Community Benefit Report, which highlights some of the advancements we made last year associated with our five operational Pillars of Success: People, Quality, Customer Service, Growth and Financial Strength.
People
- We now employ more than 470 individuals, the majority of whom live in Cass County. These jobs result in approximately $45 million in annual salaries and benefits that are re-invested locally through the residents who live and shop in our area communities.
- We increased the number of students using Cass Regional for their clinical training, and we initiated discussion with a local school district to develop a health sciences program under the Real World Learning initiative.
- Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation awarded $11,100 in scholarships to seven students who are pursuing careers and/or continuing education in health care.
- Our Patient Assistance Fund, which is made possible by donations to Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation, provided more than $28,000 in assistance to approximately 143 patients.
Quality
- We received the American Heart Association's Get With The GuidelinesĀ® - Stroke Silver Plus quality achievement award for our commitment to ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines, ultimately leading to more lives saved and reduced disability.
- We received a Bronze medal from Health Quality Innovators through the Health Quality Improvement Contractors Recognition Program for our success in improving the quality and safety of health care.
- We were named one of the nation's top 350 Cleanest Hospitals by Becker's Hospital Review and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Cass Regional is one of just 10 hospitals in the state to receive this recognition.
- We continued to show strong performance in the CMS quality measures.
- We decentralized our pharmacy to provide additional clinical support to the inpatient units, Emergency Department, and Mills Cancer and Rheumatology Center.
- We replaced several components of our information technology infrastructure (e.g., servers, firewall, spam filters) to remain current with industry standards.
Customer Service
- We continue to be rated as four out of five stars under the CMS patient survey rating.
- Through December 2024, Cass Regional had achieved a Google rating of 4.7 out of 5 stars, based on more than 2,000 online patient reviews. This is the highest rating of any hospital in the Kansas City metro area.
Financial Strength
- We made an additional principal payment on the debt that was incurred to build the medical center, which took another year off the time period needed to retire this debt. If payments continue, we will retire the debt in 2028 versus the current schedule of 2035.
- We ended the year with 437 days of cash on hand. This makes Cass Regional Medical Center one of the most financially strong critical access hospitals in the state and nation.
- We invested nearly $3.4 million in facilities and in new and replacement equipment.
- We donated more than $17,000 in support of 27 community organizations.
- We provided $253,189 in charity care.
Growth
- Overall, we grew by 2% (as measured by adjusted patient days) compared to budget and last year.
- We expanded specialist availability in rheumatology, pulmonary medicine and otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat).
- We completed our Dietary expansion and remodeling project to improve services to patients, visitors and staff.
- We were one of the first hospitals in the Kansas City area to offer high-resolution, 3D mammograms and curved mammogram paddles to reduce discomfort during exams. The high-resolution technology, which takes many more images than regular 3D mammograms, uses artificial intelligence to fuse multiple images in order to provide doctors with greater detail.
- For patients with suspected prostate cancer metastasis or with suspected prostate cancer recurrence based on elevated serum prostate-specific antigen levels, we began offering advanced diagnosis through the use of a positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) test.
- We replaced the X-ray equipment in one of our radiography rooms, which was funded in part by proceeds from Run for the Roses, a dinner and auction hosted by Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation.
